The Core Kit: Items and Quantities

Every core item with its quantity per person and its purpose, following the United States ready.gov list.

The core kit is a fixed list of thirteen items. Two of them carry a quantity that scales with people and days: water at one gallon per person per day for several days, and food at a several-day supply of non-perishable items per person. Everything else is a count of one per household or one per person, depending on the item.

Water serves two purposes in the same figure — drinking and sanitation — which is why the gallon count is not split into separate lines. Food has no gallon figure: the recommendation is a several-day supply, non-perishable, per person.

The information category holds two devices: a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert. They are listed separately because they cover different broadcasts and different failure modes.

Light and signaling are a flashlight with extra batteries and a whistle. The whistle is on the list to signal for help; it needs no power, which makes it the one signaling item that works after the batteries run out.

Health and air are a first aid kit and a dust mask. The mask is listed to help filter contaminated air, so it sits with health supplies rather than with cleaning materials.

The remaining items cover sheltering in place (plastic sheeting, scissors, duct tape), utilities and food access (a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, a manual can opener), and navigation and power (local maps, a cell phone with chargers and a backup battery).
